EU seeks to improve green freight funding scheme

Marco Polo programme is inefficient and losing its appeal, commission says;  drive to improve air traffic management

The EU's Marco Polo funding programme to help firms shift freight away from road transport and onto greener modes is inefficient and losing interest among the sectors concerned, the European commission said on Wednesday as it unveiled plans to improve the scheme (EED 18/05/06).

Only part of the scheme's modal shift objective was achieved during the first funding phase (EED 08/07/03) and fewer firms wanted to participate this year, the commission says.  It proposes to increase funding, simplify existing rules and reduce administrative burden to attract more companies, especially in the inland waterway sector.
