MEPs claim victory in toy safety deal

The European parliament has claimed victory in a first-reading compromise deal with EU governments on a new toy safety directive that imposes tough chemical restrictions. The deal was reached in negotiations last week.

"I do not even want to call it a compromise because on all fundamental points the parliament has prevailed," centre-right rapporteur MEP Marianne Thyssen said as she announced the deal in Strasbourg on Tuesday night. "No compromise is possible on safety."
