A year of reckoning for climate

The highlight of 2009 will be December’s UN climate talks in Copenhagen to agree a new global climate treaty. Parliament elections in June and the selection of a new European commission in the summer top the EU bill.

The Czech Republic will take over the presidency of the EU on 1 January. Its top environmental priorities include advancing the debate on draft legislation to revise industrial pollution law, and discussing measures to boost sustainable consumption and production, including a proposal to extend the bloc’s eco-design law to energy-related products. Sweden will follow in the second half of the year.
