Renewed call for ban on toxic blood pressure devices

A group of NGOs has reiterated a call to ban the use of mercury-containing blood pressure monitors in the healthcare sector after an EU scientific committee found alternative devices are "generally reliable".

In an opinion issued at the end of September, the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR) said that clinically validated mercury-free devices were equivalent to mercury-based devices.
