Commission against binding green biomass criteria

The European Commission will not propose legally binding sustainability criteria for biomass used to generate heat and power, following internal disagreements on a draft policy paper on biomass sustainability due to be adopted next month.

The commission is required to report on the need for a sustainability scheme for biomass used as energy by the end of this year under the EU's new renewable energy directive. Most stakeholders backed binding green criteria for biomass along the lines of those agreed for transport biofuels, according to a commission consultation.
