EU executive reports on law breaches

The European Commission has released its 2008 report on the implementation of EU law. In the environmental field, the most common infringements were of waste, bathing and drinking water, and nature protection directives.

Nature conservation

Nature protection accounts for a quarter of environmental violations, especially failure to locate enough refuge areas under the birds directive. In 2008 these were actions against Spain and Greece and warnings to Bulgaria and Romania. Warning letters on the habitats directive were sent to six states, and France was referred to the European Court of Justice. The commission will now focus on EU funding breaches with poor effects on Natura 2000 sites.
