Just under half of the EU's 27 member states are predicting they will exceed national limits on emissions of at least one of four major air pollutants set for 2010, according to the European Environment Agency's latest progress report published on Thursday.
The report shows that 13 EU states are unlikely to be fully compliant with the requirements of the national emission ceilings (NEC) directive, down from 16 in last year's report. Denmark, Hungary and Italy now believe they are on track to meet 2010 limits for all four pollutants.
