Safe deep nuclear waste disposal achievable - JRC

There is now a scientific consensus that the safe deep geological disposal of radioactive nuclear waste "is technically feasible", according to a report published by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) on Thursday.

Countries with advanced programmes should begin to build facilities to demonstrate safe disposal is achievable in practice, says the JRC. Several countries including Sweden and Finland have already drawn up implementation plans with specific deadlines.
