ICTs to spearhead EU energy efficiency drive

Europe’s information and communication technologies (ICT) sector should cut its own energy use and help boost energy efficiency in other industry sectors, according to a European Commission recommendation due for adoption on Friday.

The recommendation implements proposals made in a commission policy paper on ICTs for energy efficiency published in March. But it makes no mention of a target for the sector to cut its carbon footprint by 20% by 2015, which sparked anger within the industry when it was floated by the commission.
