EU takes court action over water and nature laws

The European Commission is to take legal action against four member states for breaches of EU wastewater treatment and nature protection legislation, it announced on Thursday.

The UK is facing a visit to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) for repeated spillages of untreated wastewater from collection systems in London and Whitburn in the north east of the country. The lack of adequate treatment capacity for wastewater collected in London also represents a breach of the 1991 urban waste water treatment directive, the commission says.
