Commission 'must be more reasonable on van CO2'

Draft European Commission proposals to cut CO2 emissions from new vans are not "reasonable", a French diplomat has told ENDS. The 2013 deadline for applying the proposed 175g/km limit is too ambitious and the fines are "disproportionate", said the government representative.

Earlier this month, the French, German and Italian governments wrote to the commission saying the target should be phased in over several years. Draft proposals circulated in July did not envisage a phased approach, according to the diplomat. Manufacturers say all new vans should comply by 2017.
