EU 'will struggle to agree big sums for climate aid'

Europe will adopt its position on climate financing in the next fortnight but member states will find it hard to commit large sums to help tackle climate change in poor countries with budget deficits running at 10-11%, a senior EU official has said.

Artur Runge-Metzger, the EU's top climate negotiator, told a hearing held by NGO Oxfam in the European Parliament on Thursday he was "confident there will be numbers". "There is a sense among member states that it is time to come out with a signal to move the negotiations forward," he said.
