Seven states call for EU forest protection strategy

Spain and six other member states are calling on the European Commission to "urgently" draft an EU strategy paper on protecting forests from man-made and natural disasters such as fires.

Current approaches to forest protection focus on disaster response and recovery. But the most effective action is prevention, says Spain in a note backed by Greece, France, Italy, Cyprus, Portugal and Slovenia. It is due to be presented to environment ministers on Wednesday.
