EU set for more bickering over the soils directive

France has softened its stance on a proposal for a soils directive following the news that the forthcoming Spanish EU presidency plans to resurrect stalled council discussions on the issue. Until now, France was one of the main opponents of the proposal.

Speaking at a conference on contaminated soils in Paris on Wednesday, French junior environment minister Chantal Jouanno said the member state would no longer oppose the proposal. But the UK, another major opponent, says it will continue to fight it if Spain tries to get things moving again.
