Pássaro becomes Portugal's environment minister

Dulce Pássaro, the former head of Portugal's waste institute, has been appointed environment minister in the new government of recently re-elected socialist prime minister José Sócrates. The appointment was announced on Thursday.

Ms Pássaro is a non-political figure with a long track-record in waste management. She worked closely with José Sócrates when he was environment minister, and has been on the board of the water and waste regulator IRAR since 2003.
