EU tables weakened plan to cut emissions from vans

European manufacturers of light commercial vehicles (LCVs) such as vans would have to reduce average emissions from new vehicles to 175 grams per kilometre from 2014 phased in to 2016 under a draft regulation tabled by the European Commission on Wednesday.

This is less ambitious than an earlier version in which the commission suggested a 2013 deadline without a phase-in. The French, German and Italian governments had written to the EU executive arguing that this was "not reasonable".
