Governments float EU nuclear waste rules

Member states have called on the European Commission and national nuclear safety regulators to consider developing common EU rules on the safe management of nuclear waste.

The call was issued in a resolution on recommendations by the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG) adopted by the Council of Ministers on Tuesday. The ministers urged the commission to work closely with ENSREG should it decide to propose "legally binding instruments" on nuclear waste management.
