DG Environment 'could have two commissioners'

The European Commission's environment department could have two heads in future, one responsible for environment and one for climate, Green MEP Claude Turmes told ENDS on Thursday.

The Luxembourger said the current director-general of the environment department, Karl Falkenberg, backed this idea. "Both of us agree there will be a climate commissioner but that it's important this person is linked to DG Environment," Mr Turmes said. "Anything else would be an institutional weakening."
