The Spanish government on Friday gave the green light for an additional 8.8 gigawatts (GW) in new renewable energy generating capacity by 2012, including an extra 5.2 GW for wind power.
The decision was made despite significant pressure from large electricity providers to put brakes on renewable growth. These providers are complaining coal and gas-fired power generation is being squeezed out because of the sector's growth. Plants are running under capacity as a result, they say.
