ICT could 'reduce emissions by a quarter by 2020'

Information and communications-based technologies (ICT) have the potential to reduce carbon emissions by 25% by 2020 in G20 countries against a 2006 baseline, according to the initial findings of a study carried out by researcher IDC.

Smart grids, ICT-enabled smart building systems, ICT-optimised supply chains and variable motor controls in machinery are the leading technologies for reducing emissions in power generation, buildings, transport and industry, says IDC.
