Commission slaps member states' wrists over waste

Member states must take EU waste legislation much more seriously than they have done in the past, the European Commission said on Friday as it released two reports showing waste law is poorly implemented and enforced in many countries.

Implementation of the waste framework directive and laws on landfills and waste shipment are particularly problematic, the commission said. In many cases, waste treatment infrastructure is missing and waste is not collected separately, it added.
