France taken to EU court over wastewater treatment

The European Commission is taking France to the European court for failing to meet EU wastewater treatment standards in 64 large towns and cities including Bordeaux and Lyon. The standards are set in the urban wastewater directive.

Brussels is also sending first written warnings to Belgium, Luxembourg, Portugal, France and Germany for failing to install adequate infrastructure for collecting and treating wastewater in smaller towns. This is a first wave of cases targeting smaller towns.
