Energy generating capacity from renewables sources such as wind and solar grew by 13% in Europe in 2007 compared with a year earlier, according to new statistics published by electricity association Eurelectric on Monday.
A total of 8.8 gigawatts (GW) of new renewables capacity came on stream, the "largest proportional increase" of any energy source according to Eurelectric. Spain is planning a similar increase in renewables capacity by 2012.
