EU gives US, China CO2 targets cautious backing

The EU has welcomed the carbon reductions announced this week by the US and China but stressed the proposals "will be disappointing to some". It will continue to urge them to "go to the outer limits of what is possible", according to a statement.

Swedish prime minister Fredrik Reinfeldt and European Commission chief José Manual Barroso described the targets as "first steps towards steeper reductions". China said it was going to cut its CO2 emissions per unit of GDP by 40-45% by 2020 compared to 2005 levels.
