The cement sector could reduce its emissions by 18% by 2050 compared with current levels if carbon capture and storage technology (CCS) is implemented on a large scale, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).
The IEA estimates that 20-33% of existing kilns will be replaced by new ones before 2020, and that 40-45% of the global capacity could be equipped with CCS between 2030 and 2050 assuming a 100% implementation rate for new large kilns.
