Slight rise in EU environmental state aid spending

Total spending by member states on subsidies for environmental protection rose slightly in 2008 to €12.7bn, according to the latest state aid "scoreboard" published by the European Commission on Monday.

Most state aid for industry and services not related to last year's financial crisis was spent on objectives such as the environment and innovation. In total, "non-crisis" state aid remained "broadly stable" in 2008, the commission said.
