The German city of Rostock became the 1,000th signatory to the EU "Covenant of Mayors" initiative on Monday. Cities in the scheme must commit to going beyond the bloc's 20% reduction target for CO2 emissions by 2020.
The "exceptional growth" in participation since the first signing ceremony in February underlines the commitment to tackling climate change at local level, the European Commission said. Some cities have already submitted sustainable energy action plans as part of the scheme, it added.
