European steel packaging recycling rate hits 70%

More than 2.5 million tonnes of steel packaging was recycled in the EU in 2008, raising the overall recycling rate to 70%, according to the latest figures published by industry trade body APEAL on Thursday.

Recycling rates for steel packaging were higher than for other materials such as glass (62%), beverage cartons (33%) and plastics (29%). Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg achieved the highest national recycling rates for steel packaging at 93%, 89% and 87% respectively.
