States reach deal on intelligent transport systems

Transport ministers reached agreement on Friday on draft rules to create an EU framework for deploying intelligent transport systems (ITS). Governments are aiming to finalise the legislation in negotiations with MEPs early next year.

Friday's agreement would see the European Commission adopt common specifications for the use of ITS in priority areas, such as traffic information and freight management, before proposing legislation on their deployment. Member states want to have the final say on ITS deployment in their territories.
