Setting the goals for the EU's low-carbon ambition

Tackling transport emissions will be a priority for the next European Commission. Charlie Dunmore looks at an EU plan to create a long-term vision.

Newly re-appointed European Commission president, José Manuel Barroso, included an eye-catching pledge to move towards “decarbonising our electricity supply and the transport sector” in his five-year plan for his next term.

While welcoming the ambition, green campaigners said they would wait for the details before breaking out the organic champagne. Their scepticism is justified. Since 1990 transport emissions have risen by over a quarter, cancelling out many of the reductions achieved in other industrial sectors.
