The EU’s third energy market liberalisation package adopted earlier this year requires 80% of European homes to have a smart meter by 2020. National governments are starting their roll-out in anticipation of a ‘super-smart’ grid that will avoid power outages, integrate renewables and cut energy use up to 15% by enabling demand management.
