States want green exclusion criteria for biocides

Criteria for banning biocides under EU legislation should take into account the substances' impacts on the environment and not only their impacts on health, a majority of environment ministers said during a policy debate in Brussels on Tuesday.

Green criteria should be added to a list of "exclusion criteria" proposed by the European Commission as part of a revision of biocide legislation, the ministers said. The commission wants to ban substances causing cancer, mutations, reproductive problems or hormone imbalances.
