Cap set for 2013 emissions under EU trading scheme

Greenhouse gas emissions from the 12,000 energy and industrial installations in the EU's emission trading scheme (ETS) will be capped at just under 1.927 billion tonnes in 2013, the European Commission announced on Friday.

The figure is provisional, it warned, primarily because it excludes new sectors such as aluminium and new gases such as nitrous oxide, set to be added to the scheme in 2013. The commission is collecting emissions data on new entrants and will publish a revised cap in September.
