72% of EU land used for farming and forestry

The great majority of EU land is used for agriculture and forestry, representing 43% and 29% of total land cover. The data was published by statistical office Eurostat on Monday. More than 10% of land is used for residential, commercial and industrial purposes.

The greatest share of land used for residential and commercial purposes is in the Netherlands and Belgium. The data also show forests and other wooded areas account for almost 40% of the EU's total area. Cropland represents nearly a quarter of the total.
