The European Commission has begun a review of rules governing the EU's LIFE+ environmental financing programme to find out if it should propose a new instrument that would be better suited to existing and emerging environmental issues.
Under the 2007 LIFE+ regulation the commission is required, if needed, to propose a new financing instrument. An impact assessment of possible policy options will be completed in the first quarter of 2011, the EU executive said in a mid-term assessment of the regulation published by the Council of Ministers on Wednesday.
