Governments participating in the 37th assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) have agreed a global deal on climate change, described as a historic agreement. This is the first time such a deal is agreed for a specific economic sector.
The meeting's participants agreed to cap greenhouse gas emissions from international aviation from 2020, and to improve fuel efficiency by 2% annually up to 2050. The ICAO will also aim to set a global CO2 standard for aircraft engines in 2013.
