Breakthrough achieved on Swiss Gotthard Base tunnel

Engineers completed drilling the world’s longest tunnel under the Swiss Alps on Friday. Gotthard Base should enable large quantities of European freight to switch from road to rail, cutting CO2 emissions and road congestion.

At 57 kilometers (35 miles) in length, Gotthard Base sets a new record for tunnelling and is due to open in 2017, and the most important element of the new rail link through the Alps. The €9.1bn project is expected to double European rail freight volumes to about 40 million tonnes.
