EC issues guidance on nuclear decommissioning

The European Commission has published guidance on financing the decommissioning of nuclear power stations and the management of radioactive waste. It updates a non-binding recommendation issued four years ago.

The guidance clarifies the scope of the 2006 recommendation, which is intended to ensure that operators hold enough money to cover all aspects of decommissioning. It defines its occasionally vague terminology and confirms that the provisions apply equally to private and state-owned installations.
