Member states should store long-lived radioactive waste (HLW) in deep underground facilities, according to a legislative proposal on the management of spent fuels and radioactive waste to be tabled by the European Commission next week.
The proposal, seen by ENDS, is still undergoing inter-service consultation and may be amended. Member states would be required to set up national regulatory frameworks, including licensing systems for the management of spent fuels and radioactive waste.
