Italy faces EU fines over toxic waste near Milan

Italy should pay a daily fine of €195,840 until it complies with a 2004 EU court ruling urging it to clean up three landfills containing hazardous waste, the European Commission said on Thursday. Only one of the three sites has been cleaned up so far.

If condemned a second time by the European Court of Justice (ECJ), the commission says that the member states should also pay a lump sum fine for non-compliance between the first and the second rulings, based on a daily rate of €21,420.
