Commission urged to take on food waste in EU

A joint declaration from academics and NGOs presented in the European Parliament on Thursday has called on the European Commission to propose a directive on food waste by the end of 2015 and to halve such waste by 2025.

According to studies, an estimated 50% of food is thrown away globally. But this varies greatly between countries. In the US, an estimated 40% of food is thrown away. In Sweden, the average household throws away 25% of its purchased food.
