The European Commission has proposed an EU-wide ban on the use of phosphates in household laundry detergents, relaunching a debate last held in Brussels seven years ago.
The EU executive envisages a ban beginning in January 2013. This would give sufficient time for manufacturers to modify their products, it says. Traces of phosphorous compounds other than phosphates could still be used up to a limit of 0.5% by weight.
