NGOs forecast biofuels use will sharply increase emissions

Increased use of biofuels over the next decade as a result of the EU’s current renewable energy policy will be on average 81 to 167% worse for the climate than the use of fossil fuels, an NGO report released Monday claims.

Nine environmental groups including Greenpeace, ActionAid and Friends of the Earth say that the clearing of forests resulting from the increased use of fuels from agricultural crops will mean an extra 27 to 56 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year by 2020. That is equivalent to an extra 12 to 26 million cars on the road.
