MEPs call for longer coal subsidy phase-out

Members of the European Parliament’s economic affairs committee (ECON) called yesterday for the European Commission to prolong until 2018 the period of time member states can subsidise coal mines.

A 2002 regulation exempting coal subsidies from normal state aid rules will expire next month. In July the commission proposed to extend this exemption until 2014. The parliament has only a consultative role in the regulation, but it is thought the report adopted on Tuesday could influence the council. This could change the proposal through unanimity.
