MEPs call for binding energy efficiency target

Members of the European Parliament's industry committee (ITRE) approved a report on Tuesday calling on the European Commission to include a binding EU energy efficiency target in its forthcoming revision of the 2006 energy efficiency action plan.

The commission is currently undecided whether it thinks the key target in the 2006 plan for a 20% energy efficiency improvement by 2020 should be made legally binding. A revision of the policy was due in 2009 but was delayed by the previous commission until early 2011.
