European attitudes to sensitive technologies tested

A survey of European public opinion has revealed strong backing for biofuels and other key renewable energy technologies. It found increasing hostility to GM foods and a softening in opposition to nuclear power.

The Eurobarometer poll published on Thursday reveals 78% support for biofuels across the EU-27. A higher proportion still approve of “sustainable” biofuels that, for example, do not compete with food production.

The high level of public approval for biofuels is somewhat surprising after several years of critical reports and negative media coverage. Doubts have grown particularly since the EU committed in 2007 to achieve a 10% market share of biofuels in transport by 2020.
