Madrid motorway is illegal, says Spanish court

Spain's supreme court has upheld a 2008 judgement ordering Madrid's regional government to remove a stretch of the M-501 motorway which runs through a nature protection site. The court's ruling was released on Friday.

The appeal court ruled that Madrid acted wrongly both in failing to consult with the European Commission about its road-building plans and in alleging that road safety overrode the requirement for an environmental impact assessment (EIA).
