Brussels unveils energy infrastructure overhaul

The EU will spend €200bn in the next ten years to upgrade its outdated natural gas networks and energy grids and bring more renewable energy on-line, the European Commission said in a policy paper on energy infrastructure released on Wednesday.

Energy commissioner Günther Oettinger said goals set in last week's EU energy strategy for 2020 can only be met with an overhaul of existing European infrastructure. Grid upgrades are not happening quickly enough, the commissioner added.
