Potočnik: EIA directive will not be weakened

Environment commissioner Janez Potocnik has insisted that the environmental impact assessment (EIA) directive will not be weakened as a result of an ongoing review. He was addressing a conference marking the 25th anniversary of the law on Thursday.

"If this seems to be the risk during the legislative process… the commission will not hesitate to withdraw [its proposal]", Mr Potocnik told delegates in a video message. The EU executive is aiming to put forward a proposal in mid-2012, according to officials.
