Commission seeks greater wilderness protection

European Commission officials confirmed plans to boost the protection Europe’s undisturbed and unmanaged wild areas at a conference last week. The 'Restoring the Natural Heart of Europe' conference was held by the Belgian presidency in Brussels.

Stefan Leiner, in charge of the EU's Natura 2000 network of protected areas at the commission, told delegates that a wilderness register would be developed next year. Specific guidelines for its management in the network will also be produced, he said.
